OUTREACH

Expanding Access to Simulation-Based Neonatal Education

NEST brings hands-on neonatal resuscitation training directly to community and rural hospitals across New Brunswick.

Our outreach program ensures that every newborn receives the best possible care — no matter where they are born.

ADRESSING SYSTEM GAPS

NRP certification is just the initial step — it does not guarantee competence or clinical readiness.

Research shows that neonatal resuscitation skills begin to decline within months of training, especially without exposure or practice.

Outreach simulation helps bridge these gaps. It supports:

  • Realism and relevance by combining NEST's high-fidelity simulation equipment with each center’s own resources — ensuring sessions reflect local practice
  • Skill retention through hands-on practice and scenario-based learning
  • Teamwork and communication by practicing with colleagues in the actual work environment
  • Enhanced familiarity NRP algorithm and available equipment
  • Targeted feedback from NEST instructors
  • Collaborative problem-solving, allowing teams to explore challenges, identify safety or system gaps, and co-develop practical, site-specific solutions

Structure

Delivered on-site and tailored to local needs, outreach sessions prioritize realism and clinical relevance. Each session runs 4–6 hours, is fully hands-on, and focuses on  NRP-based simulation scenarios.

Every scenario is followed by a structured debrief led by expert instructors, creating space for reflection, skill refinement, and team-based learning.

Who is it for?

These sessions are designed for NRP-certified providers in community/rural centres that may be involved in newborn care or neonatal resuscitation, including:

  • Emergency physicians and nurses;
  • Obstetricians, anesthesiologists, and family physicians;
  • Respiratory therapists;
  • Paramedics and pre-hospital providers.

WHAT TEAMS ARE SAYING

"Staff was able to grow their skills in a safe learning environment. "

The simulations that NEST provided to our hospital have been incredibly valuable to our staff offering them the tools needed to quickly, and confidently, deal with complications that arise before babies can be transferred to a higher-level facility. The confidence that the staff has gained through the initial simulation has also prevented some neonatal transfers as staff learn skills to safely keep babies with their parents at our facility.

Through this education the staff have become more comfortable with CPAP initiation, working through their NRP algorithms, and creating plans of care in emergency situations. They have been able to grow their skills in a safe learning environment.

The staff have had such great feedback that physicians from other facilities reached out, asking if they could attend any upcoming education sessions to help them prepare for emergency deliveries. The staff feedback included, “the session was awesome. Definitely need more”, and “the doctor and RT who came were awesome and I found it very helpful”.
